The History of Monte Carlo
Monte Carlo, named after Charles III of Monaco, was founded in 1866. At that time, the Principality was looking to diversify its economy, which was mainly based on agriculture and fishing. Under the leadership of François Blanc, a visionary businessman, the Monte Carlo Casino opened its doors in 1863. The aim was to attract an aristocratic and wealthy clientele from Europe. Thanks to its sumptuous architecture and glamorous atmosphere, the casino quickly made Monte Carlo a renowned destination. Monte Carlo quickly became a cultural center, hosting opera, theater performances and social events. The district is home to the Monte Carlo Opera, designed by Charles Garnier (the architect of the Paris Opera), which opened in 1879. From the end of the 19th century, Monte Carlo began to attract fashion designers, jewelers and luxury brands.
